Android and Wear OS Unveil Exciting New Upgrades

Google is rolling out a major update to Android and Wear OS with Material 3 Expressive, introducing new animations, features, and cross-platform design enhancements.

Material 3 Expressive: Building on Material You

Nearly four years ago, we introduced the award-winning Material You design system, which brought a more human, approachable feel to Android devices. Now, Material 3 Expressive builds on that foundation with even deeper customization options and more playful, natural animations that make everyday tasks feel delightful.

From the satisfying haptic response when you dismiss a notification to the subtle ripple effects as other notifications react to your swipe, the experience feels alive and intuitive. You’ll notice these enhancements across your device—from navigating the recent apps screen to adjusting the volume or pulling down the notification shade, which now includes a subtle blur for added depth and clarity.

Visuals That Adapt to You

Android is also getting updated dynamic color themes, more responsive components, and enhanced typography to better match your personal style. These updates will extend across Google apps like Gmail, Google Photos, and Fitbit, bringing a cohesive and personalized experience everywhere.

We’re also giving you more control over your Quick Settings. You can now add more of your favorite actions—like Flashlight or Do Not Disturb—right where you want them, so the tools you use most are always within reach.

To help keep important info front and center, we’re introducing Live Updates, a new feature that keeps you informed in real time. Whether you’re tracking an Uber Eats delivery or following a rideshare ETA, you’ll see progress updates right on your lock screen—at a glance, and without any digging.

Designed for the Round Display: Wear OS Gets a Refresh

Material 3 Expressive also brings a fluid new design language to Wear OS, optimized for the natural curves of your watch’s round display. From scrolling animations that trace the screen’s edge to transitions that morph and flow with the interface, everything feels seamless and responsive.

We’ve updated everyday interactions like using the pin pad or controlling your media, and added dynamic color theming—so your chosen watch face style now influences the entire system. Buttons now stretch to match the display’s shape, making them both space-efficient and easy to tap. And enhanced Tiles offer faster access to the people and actions that matter most—like starting a workout or messaging a favorite contact.

With Wear OS 6, performance is getting even better. This update improves power efficiency and can deliver up to 10% more battery life—so your watch keeps up with your day.

Coming Soon to Pixel Devices

We’re just getting started. These design upgrades are coming to Android 16 and Wear OS 6, with early access arriving first on Pixel devices later this year. We’re working closely with our partners to bring this expressive, delightful design experience to more devices soon—so stay tuned.
