Apple Unveils AirPods Pro 2 With New Hearing Protection and Test Features: Here’s What You Need to Know

At the much-anticipated “It’s Glowtime” event in Cupertino, Apple introduced an array of new devices, including the upgraded AirPods Pro 2. Alongside performance improvements and design tweaks, the most standout feature is the new hearing protection and hearing test functionality. These upgrades not only enhance the user experience for music lovers and concertgoers but also transform the AirPods Pro 2 into over-the-counter clinical-grade hearing aids.

New Hearing Test Feature: How It Works

One of the most impressive additions to the AirPods Pro 2 is the hearing test feature, a first in the industry for wireless earbuds. Launching the hearing test is simple:

  1. Insert the AirPods Pro 2 into your ears.
  2. Navigate to the Settings app on your iPhone and select your AirPods from the list.
  3. Tap on the “Take a Hearing Test” option.

Before starting the test, users are asked preliminary questions regarding their environment (such as exposure to loud noises), age, and current health conditions (like colds or ear infections) to ensure accurate results. After confirming, the active noise cancellation (ANC) kicks in to create an optimal environment for the test, eliminating background noise.

The hearing test is based on pure-tone audiometry. Users are asked to tap their screen whenever they hear a tone, and after about two minutes, results are displayed. While the demo results showcased “moderate hearing loss” with 41 dB HL in the left ear and 44 dB HL in the right, Apple emphasized that the results can be shared with healthcare providers for further evaluation.

Hearing Protection for Concertgoers and Loud Environments

A unique and practical feature in the AirPods Pro 2 is the hearing protection capability. Tailored for those regularly exposed to loud environments, such as concerts or construction sites, the AirPods now actively reduce excessive noise levels that could potentially harm hearing. This feature automatically kicks in when necessary, making it a perfect companion for users looking to enjoy high-volume settings without risking long-term hearing damage.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) Enhanced

While ANC has been a core feature of AirPods for a while, the AirPods Pro 2 have taken it to the next level. In combination with the new hearing test, the ANC actively adjusts to environmental changes, ensuring that users can experience the best possible audio quality while minimizing ambient noise. This makes the AirPods Pro 2 ideal for working in noisy environments, traveling, or simply enjoying music in peace.

Clinical-Grade Hearing Aids

Apple is also positioning the AirPods Pro 2 as over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, which is a game changer for people experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss. With the hearing test providing accurate audiometry results, the AirPods can now function as professional-grade hearing aids that assist in everyday situations, such as conversations in noisy places or media consumption at personalized sound levels.

Seamless Integration with Health Data

Apple has made it easy for users to share their hearing test results directly with healthcare professionals via their iPhones, opening the door for more informed health discussions. This feature strengthens Apple’s push toward becoming a more health-oriented brand, integrating wellness features across its product line.

Design, Fit, and Sound Improvements

Along with the health-focused updates, the AirPods Pro 2 bring improvements in fit and sound quality. They come with a more ergonomic design for better comfort during extended use and spatial audio enhancements, ensuring that users get a superior audio experience. The AirPods Pro 2 now feature a USB-C port for charging, aligning with Apple’s broader move to USB-C across all devices.

Pricing and Availability

The Apple AirPods Pro 2 are priced at $249 via the official Apple Store. However, Amazon is currently offering them at a discounted rate of $199, making it a great time to purchase these feature-packed earbuds. Both the hearing test and hearing aid functionalities will roll out to over 100 countries this fall, including the United States. Prices start at Rs 12,900 for AirPods 4, Rs 17,900 for the ANC model in India.
