Asus ZenBook Duo 2024 Review: Redefining Dual-Screen Laptop Versatility

PLAYGO_DURA __BANNER728x90

Dual-screen laptops are transforming the way we work, bringing unparalleled multitasking capabilities. These devices are particularly beneficial for professionals in fields such as architecture, design, and UI programming, providing valuable additional screen real estate. While the transition to dual-screen laptops comes with considerations like higher costs and slight weight increases, the productivity boost and versatile usage they offer make them a compelling choice. Among these innovative devices, the Asus ZenBook Duo 2024 stands out, offering a superior dual-screen experience.

Design and Display

At first glance, the ZenBook Duo 2024 might be mistaken for a regular, albeit thicker, laptop. Its aluminum-magnesium alloy lid and base feature a matte finish with subtle glossy lines typical of the ZenBook series. While the lid shows some flex, the overall build is solid, meeting MIL-STD 810H military standards. Inside, the keyboard and large touchpad follow the ZenBook design, although the touchpad does not double as a virtual numpad. The detachable keyboard connects via Pogo pins and magnets, providing a sturdy and soft-touch finish to prevent damage to the display.

The ZenBook Duo 2024 features dual 14-inch OLED touch displays with full-HD+ (1920 x 1200) resolution, a 0.2 ms response time, and a 16:10 aspect ratio. Both screens support a 60Hz refresh rate, 500-nit peak brightness, HDR, Dolby Vision, and are Pantone validated, with TUV Rheinland and SGS Eye Care Display certifications for reduced eye strain.

Protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, the displays are scratch-resistant and perform well outdoors despite their glossy finish. The durable metal kickstand at the bottom can prop the laptop at various angles to optimize dual-screen usage. The dual screens can be configured in multiple ways: as a traditional laptop, with the keyboard detached and screens stacked vertically, or expanded in landscape mode using the kickstand. This flexibility is ideal for multitasking and productivity.

The ZenBook Duo offers ample connectivity options: dual Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a combo audio port on the right, along with exhaust vents on both sides. Despite its dual screens and detachable keyboard, the ZenBook Duo 2024 weighs a manageable 1.65kg.

Specs and Performance

The reviewed model is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H processor (35W TDP, up to 5.1 GHz), 32GB LPDDR5X RAM clocked at 7,467 MHz, and a 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. It also features Intel Arc graphics and an NPU for AI tasks, supported by dual-band Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.

The ZenBook Duo 2024 handles a wide range of applications seamlessly, including video editing, without any performance hiccups. While it’s capable of running some games, its true strength lies in serving creative and productivity enthusiasts. During testing, the laptop exhibited excellent thermal management, staying cool even during intensive tasks like video editing and benchmarking. The secondary display remained warm to the touch, with the fans operating quietly yet effectively.

Battery life on the ZenBook Duo 2024 is impressive. In dual-screen mode, it lasts from moring till evening. However, in single-screen mode, it can likely reach the advertised 13-hour battery life. The included 65W charger efficiently recharges the 75Wh battery, ensuring minimal downtime.

The dual-screen functionality is further enhanced by Asus ScreenXpert software and Windows 11 Home, offering extensive customization options, such as converting the secondary display into a full-screen touch keyboard.

User Experience

“As an avid multi-display user, I often felt constrained by a single laptop screen when working remotely. I previously tried using an iPad as an extended screen, but the ZenBook Duo significantly improved my setup. When you open the ZenBook Duo, it looks like a laptop from the early 2000s due to its thickness, but it has a beautiful design. Removing the magnetically attached keyboard and trackpad reveals the stunning second OLED screen.
Unlike Lenovo’s dual-screen laptop, Asus’s design uses a back hinge to support vertical mode without an origami folding stand. This makes it more versatile and easier to use in various settings. While it can’t be used in tent mode and the kickstand is less effective in horizontal mode, the trade-off for a true laptop form factor in limited spaces is worthwhile.
In terms of performance, the Intel Core Ultra 9 processor and 32GB of RAM handle AI-related development tasks effortlessly. The laptop runs local LLMs, like the OLLAMA with a Mixtral 22B model, smoothly. The dual-screen setup is the primary draw, offering unmatched productivity in a compact form factor.”

Verdict

The Asus ZenBook Duo 2024 redefines what a laptop can be, with its dual 14-inch OLED touch displays, excellent speakers, impressive battery life, and robust performance for productivity and creative tasks. Priced at INR Rs. 1,59,990, the ZenBook Duo’s dual-screen setup enhances productivity and efficiency, making it ideal for multitasking and managing workflow seamlessly. Its innovative design and strong performance can significantly enhance the computing experience for creative professionals and developers alike.
