With the emerging times propelled by an on-going health crisis, stay-at-home has become a norm providing a sense of safety and security. While we have limited our outdoor movement, have we really limited the movement and presence of dust and pollutants within our four walls?

The Indian Households Hidden Dust Study by FRAC and Dyson revealed that harmful dust particles can exist even in the cleanest of places and can go completely unnoticed. It is widely spread on various surfaces of our homes where we eat, sit, play, and sleep, such as floors, sofas, beds, and carpets even after being cleaned regularly using the traditional methods. The study also reveals that Dust mite and cockroach allergens are common triggers of all-year round allergy and asthma symptoms. Further, Moulds, type of fungus that typically grows on houses and cars when damp and warm conditions are provided, trigger allergy symptoms in susceptible people. Moreover, the health risks to babies from pollutants in household dust may be 100 times greater than for adults.

Not only this, the air in your home can contain myriad substances, from particles like dust, allergens, gases, VOCs, NO2 and benzene. These substances are known for their potential to cause respiratory and cardiovascular health problems. They can also irritate eyes, throat and skin leading to various allergic reactions. Long term exposure to high levels of dust can cause health problems especially amongst young children, elderlies, and ones with pre-existing respiratory and heart conditions.

Research has shown that the best way to deal with bacteria, pollen and dust mite allergens is to remove them from your home completely. That’s why Dyson focus their efforts on designing vacuum cleaners that pick the dust up, have cyclones that are incredibly efficient to keep it in the machine, as well as filters and seals to make sure it doesn’t get emitted back into your home. Therefore, it is imperative to regularly and efficiently clean our surroundings to maintain a healthy environment at home, ensuring the well-being of our loved ones. Dyson products are tested in the Pick-Up Laboratory to ensure its effectiveness in removing hidden dust from different floor types – from industry standard carpets, to hard floors, mattresses, sofas and all those areas which cannot be cleaned otherwise.

Dyson has been researching the technology around moving dust and its particulate matter from homes for well over 15 years. With years of expertise in studying the hidden dust and its impact on our health and environment,

Dyson is sharing the following tips and tricks with you to help you build a safe, dust free home.

  • Use Natural Cleaning Products – Some of the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) found in Indian homes can come from the chemicals in cleaning products we use on kitchen surfaces, bathrooms, and windows. Limonene is one of the compounds that makes cleaning products smell like citrus, but it can react with naturally occurring ozone in the home to create Formaldehyde. Using natural cleaning products can help lower the amount of VOCs in your indoor air
  • Vacuum regularly to deal with pet shedding – Keep your carpets, hard floors, upholstery and surfaces free of dust and pet hair, most effectively by vacuuming. When you sit on the sofa or plump up a cushion, you might notice a dust cloud. This dust will remain in the air and can be breathed in but vacuuming regularly is an easy way to decrease particulate pollution at home.

The Dyson V11TM Absolute Pro cord-free vacuum equipped with three powerful cleaning modes, on boards three microprocessors, monitoring performance up to 8,000 times a second, while, the suction automatically adjusts depending on floor type to intelligently deep clean homes

  • Ventilate and clean frequently to get rid of dust and pollen allergens – While flowers and scented candles enhance the environment, but they are also the sources of indoor air pollution. Rather than avoiding them completely, try lighting candles only in moderation and ensure that you ventilate the room, or use a purifier afterwards to help remove any remaining VOCs or particulate matter from the air. When it comes to flowers, ensure you vacuum the surface/floor where to flowers were displayed to rid your house of pollen allergens
  • Monitor the fresh air -Be wary when letting in “fresh air”. If you live next to a busy road, train line or a construction site, opening the window can allow outdoor pollution and dust, gases like NO2 and SO2, into your home. Try not to leave the windows open for too long
