Nothing Release its Design Principles with Concept 1

In a interesting blog post Carl Pei, he unveiled the Concept 1. It’s a render showing off the kinds of design features the company will use in its upcoming true wireless earbuds.

In the blog post he mentioned “A few weeks ago, we introduced ‘Nothing’ to the world with the mission to remove barriers between the technology and the people to create a seamless digital future. We envision a future where technology is so advanced and seamlessly integrated into our lives that it feels like ‘Nothing’, yet is everywhere. No screens, no dedicated devices, just barely-noticeable technology that empowers everyone to be more human.

This is our long-term vision. In the near to mid-term, we have to start with existing product categories and interpret them through the brand’s lens. We would like to share how ‘Nothing’ has been translating its vision into the first wave of products over the course of the last few months.

It all starts with design, the soul of a product.

This is Concept 1, a first expression of our design principles, starting with transparency that embodies our  commitment towards bringing technology closer to people.

Weightless – We distil technology to the essentials, embracing raw tech, where every gram and every byte live with purpose. We peel off everything superficial, like unnecessary branding on the surface, to focus solely on what adds true value to the user experience. We spend as much time thinking about what it can remove from a product, as what it can add to it.

Effortless – We strive to make things simpler for the user. We want every product interaction, from picking it up to turning it on, to be intuitive, obvious, and natural. While designing and engineering our products, We believe that form must follow function. During product development, we work on countless millimetre and pixel iterations. All these iterations add up to simplify the user experience until everything feels effortless.

Timeless – The designs that are the most appealing to the brand are ones that consist of shapes that look natural and warm, yet don’t easily feel outdated. We’ve all had that moment where we’ve interacted with an object and felt that sense of wonder or surprise. That’s a really important part of being human and something we’re always trying to balance. Concept 1 takes inspiration from a grandmother’s tobacco pipe. We try to ground our objects in something familiar, which we hope will allow them to feel fresh for many years.

These are the principles that have guided our product design over the past several months. We look forward to show you how this comes to life through our first products this summer. That’s when the fun starts.
