Sagar Gwallani, the Founder & CEO of Urbn, is a dynamic entrepreneur with a rich background in the consumer electronics industry. Armed with an MBA from the prestigious Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Sagar embarked on his entrepreneurial journey at the young age of 26, with the launch of Itek and SoundLogic in 2011.

Throughout his career, Sagar has amassed extensive experience across various domains within the consumer electronics category, including product management, supply chain operations, brand management, marketing, and sales operations. This diverse skill set has equipped him with a holistic understanding of the industry and its ever-changing dynamics.

In 2019, Sagar founded Urbn in response to the burgeoning demand for reliable charging solutions in India. With a steadfast belief in the potential of “Made in India,” Urbn was established to prioritize providing secure charging options to Indian consumers. Sagar’s commitment to quality is evident in his hands-on approach to production, which includes controlling the entire supply chain and establishing Urbn’s manufacturing unit in just the brand’s second year of operation.

What was the motivation behind launching Urbn in India? 

The motivation behind launching Urbn in India stems from recognizing the evolving needs of today’s tech-savvy younger generations. We understand the demand for portable and tech-driven solutions as we are all about new-age technology and innovation. Having sold 8 million units and earned trust from platforms like Amazon, we have set  our commitment to quality and reliability. Founded in 2019 to address a gap in reliable charging accessories, we offer a portfolio of products tailored for the young, digitally-enabled audience at accessible prices. Viewing India as a promising market, we aim to cater the modern demand for comfort and connectivity while reinforcing the commitment to delivering quality and reliability through positive customer reviews.

Can you share some insights into Urbn’s strategy to capture market share?

At Urbn, our strategy rather journey has been about understanding what our customers need and delivering innovative solutions to meet their expectations. Right from the start, we focused on building trust and reliability while meeting the consumer needs. In just our first year, we secured a spot among the top three brands in our category on Amazon. By year two, we expanded our reach even further by retailing at Croma stores nationwide.

We have continued to be about innovation and adaptability. Take, for example, our Nano Series Power Bank, which was the smallest and fastest charging power bank available at the time of its launch. Post that we introduced an entire range of charging solutions, including power banks, chargers, and cables, all with improved technology and reliability. We also launched the premium Black Series range for our discerning customers. Believing in the potential of ‘Made in India,’ we took the bold step of setting up our manufacturing unit in just our second year of operations. This step not only allowed us to keep up with the quality of our products but also kept us in sync with the latest technology trends.

The business has also seen a significant growth trajectory since its launch by growing over 75% YOY. But our vision is larger, we want to make Urbn synonymous with charging and to offer premium charging solutions to every Indian. With this vision and our commitment to innovation and quality, we’re confident that Urbn will continue to lead the way in the charging solutions market.

Could you elaborate on innovative product lines that Urbn will be launching in India, including their unique features and benefits?

At Urbn, our key vision has been to become a category leader in charging solutions. When we started, we realised that Indian consumers relied solely on branded chargers that came with their phones. So, we introduced Urbn charging solutions, offering high-quality chargers and adapters compatible with all mobile brands, both Ios and Android.

  • Our journey began with the launch of the ultra-compact power bank in 2019, setting a new standard for size and efficiency. Building on that success, we introduced the Nano series, which takes compactness to newer heights. What makes the Nano series stand out is the integration of batteries commonly found in electric vehicles. This strategic choice not only allowed Urbn to create a remarkably small power bank but also ensured a battery lifespan four times longer than conventional counterparts. This commitment to sustainability and durability sets Urbn apart in the competitive landscape.
  • Our latest innovation, the MagTag wireless power bank, is a testament to our dedication to versatility. This power bank not only supports wireless charging for iPhones but also includes a unique MagTag ring for seamless compatibility with Android devices. We’re bridging the gap between ecosystems, providing users with a hassle-free charging experience.
  • Breaking new ground, we’re introducing the GaN Pro 20W/25W adapter, one of the smallest adapters available. Despite its compact size, it doesn’t compromise on power and is compatible with iOS and Android devices, making it perfect for travellers.
  • We offer reliable products made in India, Urbn ensures quality from our own factory, specifically designed to cater to the preferences and requirements of Indian consumers.

 In the consumer durables and retail industry, power banks have become a highly commoditized product. Consumers generally encounter large, expensive, and not up to the standard products in the market. However, Urbn has carved out a niche for itself by offering premium, compact, and fast-charging solutions.

In a highly disorganised market, Urbn distinguishes itself by prioritising quality and reliability in its technology. This approach allows us to stand out where consumers are often overwhelmed by subpar options.

Within this competitive landscape, Urbn positions itself as a brand that understands the evolving needs of consumers. We aim to provide solutions that not only meet but exceed expectations, offering products that are not just functional but also stylish and reliable.

Tell us about your new Brand Ambassador face Kartik Aryan and the collaboration

Kartik’s dynamic persona is consistent with our concept of innovation, integrating perfectly with the requirements of the younger generation. Catering to the preferences of today’s youth, Urbn emphasises the need for on-the-go charging while staying in style. As the brand ambassador, Kartik is a true blend of creativity, perpetual energy, and spontaneous creation. With his unique and relatable personality, is the ideal representative for Urbn, amplifying the brand’s vision of making innovative and convenient products accessible to everyone. Kartik’s role as the face of Urbn will boost new product launches and marketing, with appearances in ads across social and digital channels to come. Together, we intend to amplify the brand’s dedication to providing customers with convenience and flair while strengthening its market position.

Can you share any insights into Urbn’s future expansion plans, and how you envision the brand’s growth in the coming years?

The team is excited about the growth projections in this category and is eager to make significant strides in the years ahead.

We have already successfully secured sourcing opportunities in the White Label space and are currently supplying to renowned companies such as Croma and AmazonBasics. This partnership with Amazon Basics will help to open up an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) opportunity for us on a global scale. Going forward, our steadfast commitment will continue to revolve around expanding our product categories, introducing new and innovative products, and growing our market presence
